Vanitas is a genre of 17th century European paintings replete with symbolic objects such as skulls, currency, time devices, luxurious items, games, plants and animals. These carefully crafted and placed elements were meant to redirect our misguided earthly pursuit of wealth and pleasure and remind us of the inevitability of death and of our subordination to a higher power. Denise's imagined archeological vignettes created in clay and mixed media are multilayered in story and significance. She reveals an unsettling beauty in the macabre and reflects on our desire to find meaning in life and death.
